As a Young Athletes Team Volunteer, you will work alongside the Head Coach and Coaches to create a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment where every child can succeed. Team Volunteers assist with activities, participant engagement, equipment setup, and family support throughout the program while helping ensure a positive and inclusive experience for all participants.

Dates: September 11 - October 23, 2026
Schedule: Friday Afternoons
Commitment: approximately 2 hours per week, once a week for 7 weeks

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Help manage and grow the @LETR4SOSC Instagram account. Create and post fun, engaging content that highlights LETR events, athletes, fundraisers, and volunteer efforts. Share photos, videos, reels, and stories from events throughout the year. Respond to comments and messages and help keep our followers engaged. Work with LETR volunteers and staff to collect content and share updates from around the regions. Help promote upcoming events, fundraising campaigns, and athlete stories. Keep the Instagram page active, positive, and aligned with the mission of Special Olympics Southern California. Use creativity to come up with new ways to increase engagement and reach more supporters. Assist with simple graphics, captions, and hashtags when needed. Be a digital ambassador for LETR and help tell the incredible stories of our athletes, volunteers, and law enforcement supporters.

TRAINING & SUPPORT 

 Receive direct supervision and mentorship from the LETR Liaison and Development Administrator  Initial meeting to discuss direction and visionBi-monthly check-ins for progress tracking and goal settingOrientation and onboarding covering SOSC history, mission, and language protocols

COMMITMENT & WORK SITE

  Internship runs year-round with a minimum 6-month commitment  Requires Flexible – Remote work approximately 3-5 hours per week, with additional opportunities on day-of major events and fundraising campaigns.

  Attendance at select fundraising events during the internship term is required

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS 

Enjoys social media and creating content. Comfortable using Instagram (posts, stories, reels, etc.). Organized, dependable, and responsive. Passionate about Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Help manage and grow the @LETR4SOSC Instagram account. Create and post fun, engaging content that highlights LETR events, athletes, fundraisers, and volunteer efforts. Share photos, videos, reels, and stories from events throughout the year. Respond to comments and messages and help keep our followers engaged. Work with LETR volunteers and staff to collect content and share updates from around the regions. Help promote upcoming events, fundraising campaigns, and athlete stories. Keep the Instagram page active, positive, and aligned with the mission of Special Olympics Southern California. Use creativity to come up with new ways to increase engagement and reach more supporters. Assist with simple graphics, captions, and hashtags when needed. Be a digital ambassador for LETR and help tell the incredible stories of our athletes, volunteers, and law enforcement supporters.

TRAINING & SUPPORT

COMMITMENT & WORK SITE

Support young athletes during program sessions by providing encouragement, guidance, and positive reinforcement. GOAL/IMPACT 

Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) is dedicated to creating opportunities for our athletes to find strength, success, confidence, and joy on and off the playing field. Making each competition meaningful to the athletes and to their families is important.  

 

The Games Management Team (GMT) is a group of volunteers that manages all aspects of the games.  The GMT concept incorporates several groups within a team to alleviate overload on one person. The GMT consists of the Games Director, Competition Director, Managers and Leads. Combined they are responsible for carrying out the mission, goals, planning and conducting high quality games while adhering to the predetermined timelines.  

 

 Volunteer Management Team (VMT) members assist with the overall check-in process at competitions and events. VMT members are typically the first face a volunteer sees upon arrival, and will help provide direction and instruction to volunteers.    

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Work closely with other VMT members to create a friendly and welcoming environment for competition and event volunteers  Set-up and/or clean-up of Volunteer Check-In station at competitions  Communicate with and check-in volunteers using registration system or check-in roster, including pre-registered volunteers and walk-ups  Provide directions, on-site materials, credentials, and brief orientation to ensure volunteers receives detailed instructions for their shift  Create and maintain a positive and fun environment for volunteers 

 

TRAINING & SUPPORT 

Day-of training and orientation will be provided by SOSC staff 

Commitment and Work-Site 

Day-of competition hours may vary, throughout a 8-10 week season  Volunteer Check-In locations may be indoors, or under a designated canopy outdoors, depending on competition location 

 

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS 

Minimum age 16 years old with a government issued ID (driver’s license, military ID or passport). GOAL/IMPACT 

Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) is dedicated to creating opportunities for our athletes to find strength, success, confidence, and joy on and off the playing field. Making each competition meaningful to the athletes and to their families is important.  

 

The Games Management Team (GMT) is a group of volunteers that manages all aspects of the games.  The GMT concept incorporates several groups within a team to alleviate overload on one person. The GMT consists of the Games Director, Competition Director, Managers and Leads. Combined they are responsible for carrying out the mission, goals, planning and conducting high quality games while adhering to the predetermined timelines.  

 

 Volunteer Management Team (VMT) members assist with the overall check-in process at competitions and events. VMT members are typically the first face a volunteer sees upon arrival, and will help provide direction and instruction to volunteers.    

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Work closely with other VMT members to create a friendly and welcoming environment for competition and event volunteers  Set-up and/or clean-up of Volunteer Check-In station at competitions  Communicate with and check-in volunteers using registration system or check-in roster, including pre-registered volunteers and walk-ups  Provide directions, on-site materials, credentials, and brief orientation to ensure volunteers receives detailed instructions for their shift  Create and maintain a positive and fun environment for volunteers 

 

TRAINING & SUPPORT 

Day-of training and orientation will be provided by SOSC staff 

Commitment and Work-Site 

Day-of competition hours may vary, throughout a 8-10 week season  Volunteer Check-In locations may be indoors, or under a designated canopy outdoors, depending on competition location

Throughout the year, there are several Tip-a-Cops across our entire footprint that need leadership support to be successful. LETR Ambassadors help run these activities with event logistics, event planning, and organizing. Put your enthusiasm and organizational skills towards a great cause and join a team today!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Select a Tip-a-Cop in a city near you or start a new Tip-a-Cop to lead and attend Recruit team members and SOSC athletes to assist with tasks, strongly encouraged Connect with local law enforcement agencies (contacts provided) to coordinate involvement  Reach out to establishment to introduce yourself as SOSC volunteer representative – establish rapport and appreciation of their support (in some cases, SOSC may have a contact already and we will connect you to them) Coordinate with SOSC staff to collect all materials prior to the event Orient volunteers, law enforcement, and athletes before event Manage donation collection and merchandise table Ensure photos are taken to assist with social media promotion Return raised funds and materials to local SOSC office (within 2 business days)

Attend and shadow at least two Tip-a-Cops before being a lead  Overview of tools and resources needed for tasks  Supply box and training instructions provided on how to run credit card machine and fund reconcile form
