Through fun, engaging activities, Young Athletes helps children develop foundational motor skills, social skills, confidence, and readiness for sports participation. Volunteers play an important role in creating a positive and welcoming environment where young athletes and their families can learn, play, and grow together.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist coaches and staff with setting up and facilitating Young Athletes activities and skill stations. Support young athletes during program sessions by providing encouragement, guidance, and positive reinforcement. Help create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants and their families. Encourage participation and celebrate athlete successes throughout each session. Assist with program setup, cleanup, and equipment organization as needed. Serve as a positive role model while representing Special Olympics Southern California.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with children is helpful but not required. Spanish-speaking volunteers are welcomed but not required. Enthusiastic, patient, and comfortable interacting with young children and families.

Unified Champion Schools is an inclusive school-based strategy designed to bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities to participate in activities in three core areas:  sport and fitness, youth leadership, and campus engagement. This strategy aims to develop leadership and advocacy skills for all students in the K-12 school community and throughout college and university campuses in SOSC’s footprint.

This individual has a passion for inclusion and wants to make a difference within their campus and surrounding communities. They have a drive for connecting people to each other through encouragement, inclusion, and acceptance. They will leave with an increased understanding of the inclusive school programming listed above, the important role of a college within the SOSC community, as well as experience working with a large nonprofit organization.
