Special Olympics Southern California's Young Athletes Program is an inclusive sports and play program for children ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities. Through age-appropriate activities, Young Athletes helps children develop motor skills, social skills, confidence, and readiness for sports participation in a fun and supportive environment.

Young Athletes Coaches play a vital role in creating positive experiences for young athletes and their families while helping children learn, grow, and build confidence through movement and play. Coaches lead weekly program sessions, support volunteer engagement, and serve as ambassadors for Special Olympics Southern California within their communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Special Olympics Southern California staff regarding program implementation and requirements.
  • Plan and lead engaging Young Athletes sessions that may include warm-up activities, skill development stations, group games, and cool-down activities.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and positive environment where all children can participate and succeed.
  • Adapt activities, equipment, and instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of participants.
  • Encourage athlete participation, celebrate accomplishments, and foster confidence and social interaction.
  • Communicate program information, schedules, and updates with participating families.
  • Ensure all athletes complete the required registration process prior to participation.
  • Maintain attendance records and share requested program information with Special Olympics Southern California staff.
  • Assist with recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers as needed.
  • Manage program equipment and help ensure materials are available for each session.
  • Serve as a positive role model and representative of Special Olympics Southern California.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with young children, individuals with intellectual disabilities, recreation programs, education, coaching, or youth development is preferred but not required.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to create a welcoming and engaging environment for children and families.
  • Passion for inclusion and helping children develop through sports and play.
