Help Inspire the Next Generation of Athletes!
Special Olympics Southern California is seeking enthusiastic and compassionate volunteers to support a new Young Athletes program in Torrance. Young Athletes is an inclusive sport and play program designed for children ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities, helping them develop motor skills, confidence, social connections, and a lifelong love of physical activity.
As a Young Athletes Coach, you will work alongside the Head Coach to create a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment where every child can succeed. Coaches assist with games, skill-building activities, athlete engagement, equipment setup, and family support throughout the program.
Program Details
Dates: September 11 - October 23, 2026
Schedule: Friday Afternoons
Commitment: approximately 2 hours per week, once a week for 7 weeks
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Assist coaches with age-appropriate activities and games
- Provide support and instruction during activities and help demonstrate foundational movement and sport-readiness skills
- Encourage and support athlete participation
- Help create a positive and inclusive environment for all participants
- Support participant engagement, inclusion, and safety throughout each session
- Assist with setup, cleanup, and equipment management
- Engage with families and help ensure a welcoming experience
- Serve as a positive role model for young children
- Communicate participant needs or concerns to the Head Coach when appropriate
Ideal Volunteers
- Enjoy working with young children
- Support inclusion and community engagement
- Are dependable, patient, and energetic
- Have an interest in sports, education, recreation, therapy, child development, or related fields (experience is helpful but not required)
- Are willing to complete required volunteer onboarding, trainings, and Young Athletes coach certification requirements
