Special Olympics Southern California's Young Athletes Program is an inclusive early childhood sports and play program designed for children ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities. Through fun, engaging activities, Young Athletes helps children develop foundational motor skills, social skills, confidence, and readiness for sports participation. Volunteers play an important role in creating a positive and welcoming environment where young athletes and their families can learn, play, and grow together.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist coaches and staff with setting up and facilitating Young Athletes activities and skill stations.
  • Support young athletes during program sessions by providing encouragement, guidance, and positive reinforcement.
  • Help create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants and their families.
  • Encourage participation and celebrate athlete successes throughout each session.
  • Assist with program setup, cleanup, and equipment organization as needed.
  • Serve as a positive role model while representing Special Olympics Southern California.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children is helpful but not required.
  • Spanish-speaking volunteers are welcomed but not required.
  • Enthusiastic, patient, and comfortable interacting with young children and families.

How to Get Involved:

You will be guided through the required volunteer application, ID verification and background check, code of conduct, and other general orientation requirements. Once completed, a member of our team will follow up with additional information and next steps for becoming a Young Athletes Team Volunteer.
